Recipe of the day: Sweet & sour chicken

Serves 4
Sweet & sour chicken, a staple of the Caucasian-Chinese recipe repertoire. The dish is a total western creation, though it does share some similarities with other Chinese dishes. It doesn't really matter though because I LOVE THIS DISH. When I was a kid every Friday my mom would decide she was too lazy to cook dinner and we would order out. Usually when you order out you get something you don't make at home. We would order Chinese food.

Ingredients

  • 3 Chicken breasts
  • 1 Onion
  • 1 Red pepper
  • 1 Yellow pepper
  • 1/2 Can of pineapple chunks
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 Cups of flour
Ingredients - Sauce

Note: It would have been a good idea to have the actual proportions of ingredients to put in the sauce. However, I usually just do it according to taste. The main thing to remember is that ketchup and vinegar are the main ingredients for the sauce. You'll want a small bowl 1/2 full with ketchup and 1/4 full of vinegar. Add the soy sauce and sugar to taste.
  • Ketchup
  • Vinegar
  • Soy sauce
  • Sugar
  1. Slice the chicken, onion, red pepper and yellow pepper in to chunks
  2. Heat up a pot of oil for deep frying (high heat)
  3. Crack the egg into a dish and mix in 1tbsp of water
  4. Season the chicken with salt and pepper
  5. Coat the chicken in the egg mixture, then coat in flour
  6. Make the sauce
  7. Place chicken in to the pot of hot oil and deep fry until golden brown
  8. Remove the chicken and drain it
  9. Heat up a wok at high heat
  10. Add some vegetable oil to the work (hot wok, cold oil) immediately add the vegetables and pineapple to the wok
  11. Stir fry until the vegetables are cooked, add the chicken and the sauce
  12. Stir the dish well and make sure everything is coated by the sauce
  13. Cover the wok and simmer at low heat for 5 min
